Roberts Creek:
In our world that is so changeable and abstract, touching clay brings us back to our roots, back to our humanity and reconnects us with our creative spirit. Clay has formed such an integral part of my life's journey. I especially enjoy working with porcelain, feeling the silky texture taking form and then carving flowing designs into it. It becomes a dance to my fingers and eyes. The glazes on my pots are earthy, rich and warm shino glazes, highlighted with a delicate sprinkling of ashes from our wood stove. This is a celebration of the beauty of nature in another form, ashes from a once beautiful tree now giving an indelible, gentle touch
to the pot. My other glazes are reminiscent of the beauty found in the life-giving colours of the ocean and sky. In my pottery I delight in the interweaving of nature. The simple addition of natural handles to my baskets adds harmonic balance, the gnarled branches contrasting with the sleek, smooth and crisp lines of the piece. My Japanese sake/sushi set celebrates the symbiotic relationships and dependencies within nature, a celebration of nature in a different medium.
