Roberts Creek
I have always been fully committed to making pots that are entirely functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Thus the body of work I have created over the years encompasses the complete range of ware used in the preparation, serving and consumption of food and drink.
My new work continues to incorporate functionality, but I am now altering the edges of both bowls and jars. The rims of bowls are traditionally round and symmetrical, but I am exploring the process of cutting the rims with a wire in undulating and subtle wave patterns that still maintain the integrity of the bowl but give a light and airy feeling whether the bowl is full or empty.
My jar forms have been faceted with a variety of twisted wires to create patterns in the walls. The process requires throwing very thick, smooth and even walls. Twisted wires are then used to slice partially through the walls, and by moving the wires from side to side I create variations in texture. I intend to increase the scale of my cut rim bowls, to facet wide-based bowls and to move to a covered jar form with twisted wire facets.
