Although I both handbuild and work on the wheel, the pieces I selected for this show are all handbuilt because they express my interest in the various textures in our world, the many layers and surfaces that interject themselves on one another in human relationships and in nature.
I enjoy taking rather common shapes and altering them to see how I might stretch the use of the clay. For example, my tall vase and my pitcher were formed out of slabs wrapped around tubes and then altered. The round bowl was made using a mold for the base and adding layers of coils. For my butter dish I created a pattern then altered the design to reflect the texture imprinted in the clay's surface.
No one artist has influenced my work. However, I listen to and watch artists of all genres to discern how I might formulate my own expression in clay. I often get an idea and play with it in my mind before my hands ever touch the clay, all the while contemplating how I might manipulate it to bring out all of its potential.
