My series of teapots and tubular vases are arranged in groupings that appear to grow from one another. This comes out of a creative process inspired by the study of symbiotic relationships between plants, animals, and fungi, the interdependence or transformation of two organisms into one. This can also be observed in many human thought and emotional processes. The concept of conversion and symbiotic relationship within my forms reflects both an organic and metaphorical conversation.
My teapots are everyday objects completely transformed by the textural surfacing of coils. The tube vases are reminiscent of fungi or sea life, while the coil patterning is taking form onto and joining the vessel. In some cases this is a complete covering, in others partial, a resurfacing process that transforms an object into an entity.
Creating these vessels involves both wheel work and handbuilding. The fluid process of forming porcelain clay on the wheel allows organic momentum to speak to the viewer, while the coil work adds the intricate patterns of a slow-growing organism. The pieces are finished with a fine layer of oxides or glaze and fired in an oxidation atmosphere kiln to cone 10 (23750F).
