Our colour palette is a classic copper red over rutile/blue or green and shino/golds. In this submission we have simplified, only glazing with copper red over matte green-to-black to give the most depth of colour. These two glazes give shading when they flow, especially at the wax-resisted lines.
Nature's lines are our greatest influences. Previously our patterns have been parts of the herringbone [like backbones or palm fronds). Now we are using the parallel lines and taking liberties with shell lines or orbits or wave ripples. Each piece, whether the Mediterranean vases, large shallow servers or hanging trays, has a linear design that respects its form. Appreciation of the simple yet complex ecosystems on the Coast is currently our main inspiration.
Our firing and throwing keeps us connected with the ancient history of pottery-making, and our pursuit of copper-red takes us back to 16th century, Ming dynasty China. Only with just the nth degree of closing or opening the damper at crucial times does one get the illusive red at high-fire temperatures.
